Word documents with links to such images might therefore have long open times. This is especially true if you've configured Word's Zoom feature to display many large images at once.

If the "Auto Save" option is turned on in Microsoft Office, you can recover a previous version of the file. Click on "Recover Unsaved Documents" under the "Manage Versions" menu.
