He credited the United States, the Gulf States, and Turkey for mediating a ceasefire. The Syrian president then attempted to spin the Syrian withdrawal as planned, saying, “We are assigning local factions and tribal leaders the responsibility of maintaining security in Suwayda … based on the supreme national interest.”

But not all Syrians are buying it. Firas al-Saeed, an activist from Idlib, slammed the moves as “dangerous concessions” made without public debate. He warned that short-term political gains could cost Syria its dignity and future.
"If Israel feels that a certain leader...is an evident threat to its national security, it will operate," a former Israeli envoy told Newsweek.
