President Trump and NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani have hurled attacks at each other for months — but on Friday, they seemed to hit it off.

President Trump lavished praise on New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani as the two met for the first time in the Oval Office after a history of trading political insults.

The two had called each other “fascist” and “communist,” but when President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani faced reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, they were just two iconoclastic New York politicians who were all smiles.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, needed to avoid the mercurial Republican president using the might of the federal government to cut New York City’s aid or send in the National Guard. Trump allies wanted the president to show he would prevent the Big Apple from being bankrupted by socialism.

That collegial interaction was nearly unthinkable in the lead-up to the meeting, but the leader of the MAGA movement and the self-described democratic socialist made clear their conversation was a productive one – friendly,
